Predict
glass scale and encoder failures
Encoders are
widely used for precise positioning in CNC’sand digital
readouts. The deterioration of the output signals are not usually
detected until faulty parts are made.
Now, on the
testing of quadrature encoders (rotary or glass scale)is possible
using a digital microprocessor device, called a QUADRATER,that
detects scratches, dirty scales, and timing errors between pulses.
As the signal quality decreases, the errors increase, Plugging
in the Quadrater, like an extension cord,in line with your encoder
you can display the quality of the encoders output. From the signal
quality it is easy to predict that the encoder is going to fail.
Ideally, encoders
should be periodically tested as part of a preventative maintenance
(PM) program. As the light source and the mechanical parts slowly
degrade, the encoder will miscount. Worn out encoders should be
replaced before they cause trouble. The traditional testing method
requires analysis by a trained technician using an oscilloscope,
in practice this is not done because it is to disruptive to production
environment. |
